Michaelerkirche
Members of the Choralschola of the Vienna Hofburgkapelle will accompany the Eucharistic celebration on Ash Wednesday with Gregorian chants, conducted by Antanina Kalechyts.
Traditionally, the ash cross is administered during the celebration.
Ash Wednesday has a profound meaning for Catholics around the world: it marks the beginning of the 40-day period of Lent in preparation for Easter. During church services on this day, the ash cross is marked on the foreheads of the faithful, accompanied by the words: ‘Remember, man, that you are dust and will return to dust.’ This symbol reminds us of the transience of life and calls for conversion and repentance.
Lent is supposed to be a time of inner reflection and renunciation. Many believers consciously abstain from luxury foods or devote themselves more to prayer and charity. The aim is to renew oneself spiritually and prepare for the celebration of the resurrection of Jesus Christ.
Ash Wednesday is therefore not only a day of new beginnings, but also an invitation to reflect on one's own life and faith.
